Swakopmund was founded in 1892 as the main harbour of German South West Africa, because Walvis Bay next door was already British. The result is a small Wilhelmine town of gabled houses, a lighthouse and a jetty, dropped between the Atlantic and the Namib. Namibians come here to escape the interior heat: the Benguela current keeps the coast cool and often fogbound even when it is 40 degrees inland.
The town
The Woermannhaus with its tower, the old station now a hotel, the Hohenzollernhaus and the 1911 jetty are all within a walk. The Swakopmund Museum covers natural history and the colonial period, including the 1904 to 1908 genocide of the Herero and Nama, which Germany formally recognised in 2021. Cafes still sell apple strudel and there are two breweries.
Activities
The dune belt begins immediately south of town. Sandboarding, quad biking and dune buggies operate daily, and a living desert tour looks for the small specialists of the sand: sidewinder adder, palmato gecko, dancing white lady spider and the beetles that harvest fog. Skydiving over the dune sea is popular because the visual contrast is extreme.
Walvis Bay
Thirty kilometres south, the lagoon holds up to 100,000 birds, including tens of thousands of lesser and greater flamingos. Boat trips out to Pelican Point encounter Cape fur seals that climb aboard, heaviside dolphins and, seasonally, whales. Kayaking among the seal colony is the quieter version.
Sandwich Harbour
Fifty kilometres further, dunes 100 m high fall directly into the sea in a lagoon reachable only by four-wheel drive at the right tide, and only with an operator who knows it. This is the classic image of the Namibian coast and it is not a self-drive destination.
The fog
The cold current meeting hot desert air produces fog on around 180 days a year, rolling in overnight and burning off by late morning. It is the only reliable water source in the Namib and the reason a specialised ecosystem exists at all. Bring a jacket even in January.
Practicalities
Swakopmund is four hours from Windhoek on a good tarred road and is the standard midpoint of a Namibian circuit. It has the widest choice of restaurants outside the capital and the best supermarkets before the long stretches north.
